Microsoft completes $7.5 billion GitHub acquisition
Microsoft today announced it has completed its acquisition of GitHub, bringing to a close a procedure that began in June. The $seven.5 billion deal will see the GitHub squad come under Microsoft's fly with Microsoft Corporate Vice President Nat Friedman taking over every bit CEO.
The news comes just a week after the European Matrimony canonical the deal, ruling that the merged entity wouldn't post any major concerns over competition. The commission's ruling stated:
The market investigation confirmed that Microsoft would not have the market power to undermine the open nature of GitHub to the detriment of competing DevOps tools and deject services. This is because such behaviour would reduce the value of GitHub for developers, who are willing and able to switch to other platforms.
Under Friedman's watch, Microsoft will continue to operate as an independent entity. In a statement announcing the completion of the deal, Microsoft said:
GitHub will retain its developer-outset ethos, operate independently, and remain an open platform. Together, the two companies will work together to empower developers to achieve more at every stage of the development lifecycle, advance enterprise use of GitHub, and bring Microsoft'south developer tools and services to new audiences.
In a weblog mail celebrating the news, Friedman provided a wait at the areas we can expect GitHub to focus on going forward:
We volition start past focusing on the daily experience of using GitHub and will double down on our newspaper cuts projection. We volition amend core scenarios like search, notifications, issues/projects, and our mobile experience. And of course nosotros are excited to brand GitHub Actions broadly available.
